The Mortgage Myth

If you believe everything you read in the papers you would be forgiven for thinking that there is not much point in applying for a mortgage at the moment because it is all too difficult. Banks aren’t lending and those that are want blood samples and a charge over your children in order to even think about giving you a few quid.

The good news is that this is actually a myth. There is no mortgage shortage and lenders actually have begun to compete for your business. How else can you explain the new trend of 7 day sales from certain lenders who are offering tracker rates from as low as just 1.99%, (4.0% APR)?

Bank Base Rate Decision

Although the Bank of England’s’ Monetary Policy Committee, (MPC) have yet again decided to keep Base Rate on hold, the internal splits within the committee seem to remain with a 4 way split according to the minutes of the last meeting.

Whilst the debate rages on, recent research conducted by the BBC reflected the differences within the MPC. Of 22 economists who were asked “In which month do you think the MPC will raise interest rates?”, 14 said August, 4 plumped for May and 1 each reckoned on June, July, November and February.

Rate Rises In Clear View, But Not Just Yet

After another month of “will they or won’t they” and “they should, they really shouldn’t” economic and political discussion, the Bank of England’s’ Monetary Policy Committee, (MPC) have just about held firm yet again and decided to keep Base Rate on hold.

After the almost unprecedented 4 way split revealed in last month’s meeting minutes, it really looks like the Governor Mervyn King has a fight on his hands to keep any sense of unity and these public splits do the Bank no particular favours.

Large Mortgage Loans & Bankers Bonuses

This week we shall undoubtedly see the thorny subject of bankers bonuses raising its head again, especially as Barclays are due to be the first bank to reveal its bonus figures on Tuesday. Whilst this is a cue for Vince Cable to stomp down the well-trodden warpath, the property market is usually a beneficiary of this.

Already this year we have seen the number of enquiries for large mortgage loans on £1m plus properties increase dramatically as many traditionally cash-buyers look to take advantage of low mortgage rates and property prices that in a few years time will look like a very good deal as the economy improves.

Bank Base Rate Held – For Now

After a whirlwind of headlines last month, some proclaiming the death of the recovery and others forecasting apocalyptic levels of inflation, the Bank of England’s’ Monetary Policy Committee, (MPC) have held firm and decided to keep Base Rate on hold for yet another month.

The minutes of this meeting should make for interesting reading as there is more than a touch of speculation about just how “firm” the MPC actually are in their current stance.

No doubt the last GDP figures will have taken some of the pressure off, with an unexpected 0.5% fall in production giving those who seem to welcome a double-dip some ammunition and allowing the MPC some breathing space.
